If JESUS was just a Sacrifice – Why study HIS words?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 19, 2020:
I know of no historically orthodox Christian who would ever agree with the assumption that our Lord Jesus was *just* a sacrifice, as if that is all we believe Him to be. It certainly isn't how the Bible presents Him. At any rate, we listen to Him because we believe Him to be the incarnate Son of God, who is fully God and fully man in one person; who was born of the virgin Mary; who lived a sinless life on our behalf; who died on the cross for our sins; who rose from the dead, thus conquering death on our behalf; who ascended to the right hand of God the Father, where He ever lives to intercede on behalf of those who trust in Him as Lord and Savior; and who will one day return to earth in order to establish a Hew Heavens and the New Earth, in which those who have trusted in Him will live forever. That is *just* a summary of the reasons we listen to Him.
Well friends, I might be absent from here for a day or so, had to go to the hospital.

Can only white people be racist?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 18, 2020:
My own experience has taught me that racism itself definitely knows no race; it can affect anyone of any race. For example, for part of my childhood I was a member of the only white family in an all black neighborhood. There were a couple of old white ladies that lived in the area, but we were the only other white people, and we were the only family. I and my three siblings lived with my father there, and later with my father and stepmother, and I often experienced attacks against me simply because I was white. I was called every name they could think of (the terms *honky* and *cracker* being prominent ones), and I was often threatened and sometimes assaulted. Groups would often follow me home from school deriding and threatening me. On at least one occasion a very large group surrounded our house throwing rocks at the house and shouting threats at us, but, thankfully, the police were able to disperse them before things got really bad. This was during my formative years in the early seventies, but finally my father and stepmother were able to afford to move us away from there and into a better neighborhood and school system. Sadly, I was eventually bused right back into an even worse situation that I had previously left behind, and I ended up being one of a very few white kids in an all black school, at which I once again experienced being on the receiving end of racism. Now, I'm not saying that I never saw any racist words or actions from white people toward black people during those years. My own maternal grandfather could be a pretty racist guy. My father, however, would not allow any racist attitudes in our family. He had been an ardent supporter of MLK and the Civil Rights Movement, and he constantly pointed out that we could not judge a whole race because of the actions of a few. One of his very best friends was a black man, a man who often took me and my siblings on outings so that my father and stepmother could be alone together. He was kind of like an uncle to us. We also had many good black friends in our church, which uniquely (at least at that time) had a mix of both white and black families. Anyway, my experience taught me that racism existed among both white and black people (as well as among other groups) and that there were also very good people -- people who are not racist -- among other races as well. So, I know quite well that it is *not* only white people who can be racist. The very notion is one of the more stupid lies I think I've ever heard. All people are sinners, and all sinners are capable of just about any sin, including racism. Oh, and by the way, NO ONE liked forced busing! At least not that I can recall.

Words Can Be Violence?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 16, 2020:
It seems to me that the conflation of speech with violence by the Left is intended by them to serve a dual purpose. On the one hand, they want to use it to stop speech with which they disagree under the guise that is amounts to violence. On the other hand, they want to use to it to justify their own actual violence in response to speech with which they disagree. We cannot long tolerate such blatantly hypocritical and utter nonsense in a civilized society and still remain free.

As I said in a comment below, I took this oath when I enlisted in the U.S. Navy back in 1984: > I, Keith Throop, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. Although I am no longer in the military, and thus no longer under the UCMJ, I nevertheless regard my oath to the U.S. Constitution to be binding. I will seek to fulfill that oath in any way that I am able, given my age and corresponding limitations. For now that means casting my vote, campaigning for good candidates, protesting, signing petitions and collecting signatures, contacting those who represent me, etc.

I'm not sure I can completely agree with every point in the video about the need for anti-authoritarians, but I suspect I need think think more about what is actually meant by the term as it is used in the video. I certainly agree with the dangers pointed out concerning the public schools and the kind of authoritarianism discussed. I guess there is a big difference between the need for authorities to exist -- which I think is obvious -- and *Authoritarianism*. Anyway, as usual, you've posted some great content that is challenging and thought-provoking in a good way.

Did consciousness precede life or did life precede consciousness?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 9, 2020:
I have time to offer a few brief thoughts off the top of my head. As a Christian who believes in God as revealed in the Bible, it seems to me that both life and consciousness are co-eternal aspects of God. Thus neither preceded the other with respect to God. As for human beings, I would hold that God gives us both life and consciousness, and I would assume that both are necessary aspects of our existence as spiritual beings made in His image and that we cannot, therefore, possess one without the other.

A QUESTION TO CHRISTIANS How do you feel about this?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 8, 2020:
It is irrational to blame the teaching of Romans 13 for people's misuse of it. Almost any good teaching can be taken out of context and distorted in order to wrongly try to justify one's evil actions. Understood in its proper Biblical context, the teaching in Romans 13 does not forbid civil disobedience to unjust laws, for example, nor does it prohibit the protection of the weak and innocent, which is one reason why Hitler rounded up many thousands of Christians, especially priests and pastors, and had them sent to concentration camps. There were also many Christians who hid and protected Jews who, when caught, were arrested and sent to the camps or killed. The most famous of this latter group was, perhaps, Corrie ten Boom. The most famous Christian resistor of all was, perhaps, Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Why Is an Ordinary Life Not Good Enough Anymore? – Alain De Botton - YouTube
KeithThroop comments on Dec 8, 2020:
I think that most people have mixed motives for things. So, a person can indeed be motivated to accumulate things because they see it a a conduit to love and respect, as Alain De Botton says, while at the same time being motivated by things like greed or the desire for security. I get the point he is making, and it is valid, but there is no need to assume only one real or, perhaps primary, motivation for the accumulation of material things. I totally agree that people need to learn to be content with what Alain De Botton describes as "an ordinary life." But I would also observe that we need to stop viewing such a life as he describes as simply "ordinary." In my view, what most people think of as *ordinary* is actually pretty *extraordinary* if we stop to really think about it. As a Christian, of course, it is my belief that each of us is created in the image of God and that, no matter how tainted by sin, that image remains in all of us. Thus we are each of us extraordinary beings, and all that we do that is good and praiseworthy is a reflection of how extraordinary we are, or, rather, of how extraordinary God is, who made us. After all, when we live well, seeking to be like Him in all of our relationships and actions, we are reflecting what is extraordinary about Him, and that is what makes life worthwhile. It is how we find true fulfillment, for it is our ultimate purpose. But, not surprisingly, I believe this can be achieved only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Anyway, that's my two cents. I really appreciated the the video. It was very thoughtful and thought-provoking. It hits upon an issue many people need to think more clearly about. I'm sure many who read this may disagree with some of what I've said, but perhaps they will find some of it helpful as well. :)
The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Do Not Need - YouTube
KeithThroop comments on Dec 8, 2020:
It is so important to try to live debt free if we can. Debt is often a kind of slavery to a cruel master. To be sure, some debt can serve a good purpose, so long as it is affordable debt. For example, I see nothing wrong with a reasonable mortgage that one can afford. But far too many people are living far beyond their means, living from paycheck to paycheck simply because they buy more than they need and do not save, and it would not take much to create a severe financial crisis for them.

Forgive quickly. Forget Slowly.
KeithThroop comments on Dec 4, 2020:
I think we should always be ready to forgive those who are truly sorry for what they have done. But we cannot, of course, always formally extend forgiveness to them unless they are truly sorry for what they have done. Once we have extended forgiveness to them, however, we must then resolve not to hold what they have done against them any longer. We must not keep bringing it up, using it as a weapon, but instead we must allow them the opportunity to regain our trust. True repentance means they will want to regain our trust, and true forgiveness means we will want to be able to trust them again.

More than this, poetry is pleasurable. It is attractive to read and even more so to read aloud (or sing)” (Tremper Longman, *How to Read the Psalms*, p. 92). That is a quote I like to cite when teaching how to interpret ancient Hebrew poetry found in the Bible. It is a part of a graduate level course I teach on Biblical Hermeneutics. Anyway, much of the Old Testament is actually written in poetic form, often alternating with historical narrative prose.

I listen to many genres of music. For example, in my car I have my SiriusXM channels set for every decade starting on the 40's on 4 all the way up through the 90's on 9. I also have a a Gospel station, a country station (which focuses mostly on older country music), the Beatles station, a Classic Rock Station, and a couple of stations which focus on soft rock from across the decades. I switch between all these while driving, especially on longer trips. Lately I've been listening to some U2, Genesis, and Bee Gees, along with old Everly Brothers, Platters, The Young Rascals, Dave Clark Five, and Buddy Holly stuff around the house, mixed in with Motown from the Temptations and Al Green. But I've also been listening to Randy Stonehill, The Newsboys, and Keith Green from the Christian music scene. I'm pretty eclectic in my musical tastes.
And it's an unbroken pattern.

“Don't buy books for your shelf, buy them for yourself.
KeithThroop comments on Nov 23, 2020:
“Reader, if thou intendest to go any farther, I would entreat thee to stay here a little. If thou art, as many in this pretending age, a sign or title gazer, and comest into books as Cato into the theatre, to go out again - thou hast had thy entertainment; farewell!” (John Owen, The Death of Death in the Death of Christ -- I think this quote comes from the preface to the reader, as I recall.)

I don't doubt that the guy could well be lying --in fact, I think he almost certainly is lying -- but I do have my doubts about reading body language.

Ayanna Pressley: Canceling Student Debt Will Ensure ‘Equitable’ Economic Recovery ...
KeithThroop comments on Nov 23, 2020:
I dont' want to sound harsh, but where I come from people should be responsible for their own debts. If we want to help with the problem of all this crushing student debt, then we should probably rethink whether or not so many young people really need a traditional college education in the first place, as well as thinking about measures to reduce how expensive it is. Of course, those on the Left want to keep encouraging as many young people to go to college as possible, whether or not they end up actually needing or using the degrees they obtain, since this is their mechanism for indoctrinating them. Then they promise to relieve the debt with the hopes of teaching them to be even more grateful to and dependent upon the state. It's a bad idea. They should be encouraged not to get into debt in the first place, and then, when they do incur debt, they should be expected to pay it like the rest of us. Oh, and lest some should think I am being totally heartless, I will just say that I spent about a decade as a student myself, seven years full-time and 3 years part time, obtaining a B.A. and an M.Div. that was 104 semester hours of additional work. I know how expensive school is, but I also know that hard work and responsibility enabled me to make it through with minimal debt and to pay off what debt I did have on my own. By God's grace I taught my children the same principles of hard work and responsibility, and two of them have done the same in getting their own college degrees. So, I know full well that it can be done.

I sure hope she has the kind of case she says she has, although I can't imagine an attorney of her caliber would make unsubstantiated claims of such huge proportions.
Is it just me dreaming or did we lose some trolls?

Now that you mention it, it seems to me that we have lost some trolls, particularly a couple of the more virulently antisemitic ones.

KeithThroop comments on Nov 22, 2020:
It reminds me of a night I spent drinking wine and playing Crazy 8's with a group of old guys on the sidewalk in Philadelphia many years ago. I was a 20 year old sailor, and I met them a few blocks from Penn's Landing. They were running low, and I offered to buy a bottle, which led to several more. I got pretty drunk, but we had a great time playing cards. I used to do that kind of thing a lot for a number of years, but it was not too long after that particular evening that I began to realize I was developing a real drinking problem. I finally quit drinking and smoking when I was 21, and those were two of the best decisions I ever made. Anyway, it's amazing what memories and feelings a good painting can bring back.
