I don't think we are on the verge of a "race war." If anything, we are on the verge of a "worldview war." a culture war that may turn from its current cold war status to a hot war. In this culture war there are many who are trying to use race to instigate increased division, such a Diddy is trying to do, but I don't think the majority are actually falling for it any more. I guess we'll see.
Super Woke Update: University Votes to Stop Calling Its English Department the ENGLISH Department...
KeithThroop comments on Oct 17, 2020:
> Oh, please. The name of an Ivy League University English department is going to be changed because of the “conflation of English as language and English as a nationality”? > > With all “due” respect to Cornell, that is utter nonsense. Does anyone with a modicum of intelligence confuse the name of an English department to mean “a department where we learn about ENGLAND”? The answer to that rhetorical question is, of course, "No! No one with a modicum of intelligence would confuse the name of an English department with "a department where we learn about england.'" But, here's the thing, those Ivy League elite snobs at Cornell University don't really think the rest of us do have a modicum of intelligence. We do, however, and we also have enough sense to see that years of academic study don't necessarily equate with having a modicum of common sense or wisdom. πŸ˜‰
The Islamic religion is in need of a reformation by whatever means necessary. [euronews.com]
KeithThroop comments on Oct 17, 2020:
Typically, when one uses the word "reformation" to refer to a religion, it indicates that the religion should get back to its original, unadulterated form. Is that what we really want for Islam? As I see it, those that have that mindset are precisely the problem. It is the nominal adherent of Islam, the type that a true Muslim would think needs reformation, who doesn't see the need for things like jihad or martyrdom.
Some screwed up priorities there.

KeithThroop comments on Oct 16, 2020:
I watched this supposed "town hall" with my wife last night. It was clear from the beginning to the end that Guthrie was intent on attacking President Trump in an ill-fated effort to make him look bad or to trip him up. It just made her look as partisan and petty as we all suspected she was. If we had any doubt, she has completely removed it.
Fukushima: Japan 'to release contaminated water into sea' [bbc.com]
KeithThroop comments on Oct 16, 2020:
> Environmental and fishing groups oppose the idea but many scientists say the risk it would pose is low. > > The government says no final decision has been made. > > The release of more than a million tonnes of water, which has been filtered to reduce radioactivity, would start in 2022 at the earliest, according to Japanese media outlets including national dailies the Nikkei and the Yomiuri Shimbun. > > The water would be diluted inside the plant before release so it is 40 times less concentrated, the Yomiuri Shimbun said, with the whole process taking 30 years. I don't see how the scientists who say that "the risk it would pose is low" could possibly know the real risks that 30 years of releasing radioactive water into the ocean would entail. I do know, however, that the ocean doesn't belong to Japan, and I really don't think they should be allowed to release such water without at least consulting with other nations around the Pacific rim.

Actually, this is one time that I don't think Biden's remark actually was racist. He simply said that, if he had a daughter, she would be white ... and that would be because he and his wife happened to be white. That is all. Now, I'm glad this guy in the video is sick of Biden, and I hope he votes for Trump. But I would prefer he do it for the right reasons rather than the the wrong ones. Yes, Biden has shown himself plenty capable of saying racist things, not to mention constantly making up things about himself that have no basis in reality, so there are plenty of things to attack him for other than this one pretty harmless statement.

I should point out that I think there is a point of confusion in your question, at least as I understand it. Your question does not seem to contemplate such a distinction. My aforementioned article presupposes it.

"South Africa lays out conditions to seize land, says investors will be reassured" ...
KeithThroop comments on Oct 13, 2020:
> The law would allow land to be confiscated without reimbursement in certain cases if it is unused, abandoned or poses a safety risk .... There are potential loopholes there large enough to drive a Mack truck through. Who gets to decide when property is "unused," and what are the criteria for such decisions? Who decides when a property is "abandoned," and what are the criteria for such decisions? Who decides when a property is "poses a safety risk," and what are the criteria for such decisions? But then there is also the basic issue that, whatever the use or non-use of the land, it actually *already belongs to someone*, and they should be able to do what they want with it, or not do anything at all with it, if they choose, so long as they are not breaking any laws. And, even then, it should still be very hard to simply take their property from them. If I were one of those land owners, I would not be reassured at all when reading this article. I would see it as a description of their attempt to make their landgrabs appear more reasonable and just when they are clearly anything but that.

Right, our Founding Fathers correctly foresaw the potential problem with the larger, more populous states asserting their own will over the smaller, less populous states, and they wisely developed the electoral college to give those states a voice. The Commission on Presidential Debates, which has definitely leaned Left, despite how supposedly non-partisan it is supposed to be, wanted to change the rules to a format that would favor, guess who? Joe Biden. After the first debate indicated just how unfair the moderator was to President Trump, why on earth would he submit to a debate in which a moderator could easily shut off his sound if he or she chose to do so? Why would he submit to a debate in which it would be so easy for Joe Biden to cheat? Or for the "moderator" to help him even more? As @guru pointed out, it is "disappointing but understandable" that the President would refuse to do it.

KeithThroop comments on Oct 8, 2020:
I noticed that his arguments centered on what he saw at the time as the apparent inability of the military to integrate men and women without causing problems, and the problems he focused on were the terrible stories at the time of women being sexually harassed or molested. He was particularly focused on the issues surrounding housing men and women in close quarters, and he saw no way to stop the problems that had already arisen if that were to continue. He clearly did not think that the military could overcome these issues at the time. I'm not sure how this could be construed as his "not supporting the troops," either then or now. Noticeably absent were any arguments that women could not hack it in the military, or any other such notion that many have argued in the past. At any rate, I think we would have to ask Vice President Pence what he thinks of women in the military *now*, over 20 years later, when it appears that the military has done what he then though they couldn't do with respect to safe integration of women into the military.

James Taylor did an excellent cover of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend." The song has a good message about the importance of true friendship. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKaWQxlTsRM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAR_Ff5A8Rk By the way, the Carole King album, called "Tapestry," that contains this song is maybe one of the best ever done by a female recording artist. You should definitely check out the album if you aren't already familiar with it. :)
