Hello. I was thinking in very simple terms. In the UK, we have multiple tax rates basically depending on how much you earn. In simple terms, the basic income tax rate is 20%, and you could be taxed as much as 40% if you're very rich (I'll have to check the details, or other Brits here could help me), and I never understand why not just a flat rate for everyone. Say, you're a very successful business man and make loads of money, and if you have to pay 40% income tax instead of 20% income tax, it's like you're punished for being successful... no? The tax system is very complicated! When you think like that, you may start thinking how you can avoid paying tax and exploring options like offshore havens and other opaque tax arrangements. What taxpayers' money should be spent on is a little tricky, I guess. If you think that every child is entitled to good education and it is our duty, as a nation, to provide it, you may see it just that public spending is used for education. If you think that living a healthy life is a human right and it is our duty, as a nation, to protect it, you may see it just that public spending is used for healthcare... and so on. Broadband... if it is seen as a bare necessity and therefore everybody must have it... perhaps public spending may be used...? I don't know. Should giant tech companies provide free broadband like a charity? Why should they? I don't know what Corbyn means by free broadband exactly.

Naomi replies on Nov 17, 2019:
@Gardener, @JackHammel My original question was if we need inequality (or it is almost like a natural condition for us, humans) to better ourselves. Put it this way - Let's say people in developing countries think that life in America looks much better than theirs - they recognise the difference in quality of life, i.e., inequality, so, they decide to emigrate to America. If they didn't see inequality, i.e., they think that their life is equally good, they wouldn't be motivated to emigrate to America. There seems to be a notion that we need to have inequality to motivate ourselves to do better. Unintentionally, but my train of thought is a tad bit Rousseauian...? Oh heck, how should I know? 😂

Apart from how you feel about yourself, you cannot tell how well you're doing without measuring it based on something, and that something is comparison in my opinion. Anyway, thanks for your sensible input.

Hello jamespott. Thanks for your input. "Never mind how odd, or twisted. You cannot blame the original thinker for this. Nietzsche is a prime example. The notion (now famous or infamous rather) that "gender is a social construct" is a cautionary observation by her, and I realise that there is a profound meaning to it. Like you say, how odd it may appear, she observed and analysed the modern Western world consisting of different people with different sexual orientations in relation to cultural and societal aspects, etc., like putting jigsaw puzzle pieces together, and concluded with that statement. Unfortunately, it seems that "gender is a social construct" has been hijacked by dishonest ideologues and feminists; they take it literally and weaponise it for their own agenda.

Naomi replies on Nov 16, 2019:
Hello. Emotions like conceit and envy are usually regarded as bad things, and because I think so, too, when I recognise these bad emotions in myself, I manage not to let them surface. They are ugly things and I don't like the fact that I have them in me, but at the same time, I don't think I can eliminate them for ever because I think it's human nature. Incidentally, according to Buddhism, there are as many as 108 defilements like envy and conceit. And if I tell you I never have these bad emotions, I will be lying. Anyway, my train of thought was: If we were all equal, we wouldn't have emotions like conceit and envy, in other words, we have these emotions because we are unequal in the first place. For example, you may feel envious if someone earns more than you, and you may feel defeated by the envy you have towards that person or you can change that envy to the driving force of motivation so that you will do better in your life. Conceit is a synonym of narcissism. Narcissistic people are competitive and motivated by their own achievements, and they will continue to strive to achieve further. I was wondering if what is originally regarded as a bad emotion can give a person motivation to do well, that may be because there is inequality in the first place.

Hello. "It is manifestly against the Law of Nature, however defined, that a child command an old man, an imbecile lead a wise man, and a handful of people abound in superfluities while the starving multitude lacks in necessities." I learned that he was saying that the whole society was illegitimate because it was against the Law of Nature, and manifesting the corruption of the state. As a political philosopher, Rousseau was observing and analysing the society he lived in (built on the divine right of kings and inequality) and his observational statement such as the above wasn't the direct cause of the French Revolution. Voltaire apparently wrote a letter to Rousseau, in outrage, in response to the above view, while Robespierre was inspired by it. I learned that during the Reign of Terror, Robespierre led the committee of public safety in pursuit of an equal society, by which he even meant multiple massacres and public executions of those who were standing out, i.e. aristocrats. He was driven by ideology and not by pragmatic politics. By then, Rousseau was dead, and considering that most ordinary people were uneducated and illiterate in those days, i.e., they couldn't read, or were simply uninterested in, Rousseau's ideas, it wasn't like the masses rose by themselves, i.e., they were mobilised by elite ideologues like Robespierre. I know... my description is simplistic and inaccurate, but what I was getting at was that what was originally an observational idea (e.g., by Rousseau) could be developed into an ideology and exercised (e.g., by Robespierre), and result in terrible (or good) consequences. Then I wondered, in that case, if the originator of that idea should be held responsible for those consequences (in Rousseau's case, he couldn't have been held to account; he died before the French Revolution started). But then, I had too much wine, so...

Hello. "In many states fireworks are illegal." We might need that in the UK; some people in the UK find every excuse to have fireworks. It is inconsiderate. My late dog was terrified of fireworks. He trembled like a leaf so bad that I was worried that he might die of a heart attack. In fact, a few days ago in England, a 18-months-old puppy died from a heart attack after fireworks frightened her. Fireworks could be restricted to public displays only and not private displays (i.e., in one's private backyard). It really is bad in the UK.

Hello ForeverFree76. Come back to me after you've managed a good "agree to disagree" conversation with a decent leftist, perhaps someone who is outside America, rather than having a bashing session. You would hopefully stop talking about leftists as collective as if they are all some kind of stupid radical ideologues. It is evident that American society is very polarised over politics. When a site like this consists mostly of American people, it hardly gives any room for others from the outside to express their views. I know at least a couple of members who were driven out of this site only because they had different political views; they didn't fit in the libertarian/conservative narrative. Nasty things were said to them (ad homs). It was an echo chamber that was evident. I would say the same about agnostic.com. or any site that attracts a certain type or group of people. I acknowledge that it is human nature, and you wouldn't know what it is like until you're on the receiving side of prejudice. I know at first hand.
