Do you think greed is actually good for economy?
Aurelien comments on Aug 26, 2019:
Capitalism without ethics is what communism is to socialism. In the age of free market, corporates and greedy politicians try and have us believe ethics is not their problem - making money is. Don't be fooled by such a fallacy. @timon_phocas is on spot: capitalism has been around for millenia; yet...

Hello. I'm thinking of the case of Google. Apparently, Google controls an estimated 94 percent of the U.S. Internet search market. Monopoly? But most of us benefit from its services so much - it's part of our modern lifestyle. The thing is, Google has been directing its customers to use its services to its advantage. So, do you think Google is being greedy? Also, whether we think Google is being greedy or corrupt, it's role in supporting the economy is huge, no? Ironic?

Greed is a loaded word; a pejorative descriptor with a built in condemnation included. So when Hollywood has a Gordon Gekko spouting “greed is good,” it’s really an effort to paint an entire segment of the population—businessmen and women—as morally twisted. The definitions of greed or ...

Hello. Your moral values influence your rational behaviour. So, if greedy is immoral to you, you will of course make a conscious effort not to behave greedily. I go along with that. I know it's a stupid question, but if everybody stopped being greedy, i.e., by not spending any more money than necessary, say like Amish (lol), do you think that would have an detrimental effect on the economy?

Hello. If "greed" can be translated to "competitiveness" meaning a "strong will to win", it's hard to tell if the "strong will to win" conversely means "greed". Competitiveness is a positive thing as in healthy market competition, but if one takes greed as a morally wrong thing, I guess one could still compete without being greedy.

Naomi replies on Aug 26, 2019:
Hello. Thanks for your input. I realise it is hard to measure "greed". For example, if basic living standards include having two cars, i.e., it's perfectly normal for one to have two cars, it's not greedy to want two cars. Or, if you "need" three cars, one for you, one for your wife and one for your son, because you all have to go to work in three different places, then it's not greedy. I'm yet to define what "a healthy amount of greed".

Hello, iThink. "A failed economy leaves no space for "culture" to express itself because everyone is necessarily focused on survival" This somehow prompted me to think of cave murals. Hello. I'm simple and slow. So, let's say that I live in a small village and there is only one bakery. A wonderful smell of freshly-baked bread is coming from the bakery, so I rush to the bakery and buy all the breads. That's me buying on impulse and being greedy, i.e., selfish, not seeing the consequences clearly like I don't have enough room to store all the breads (they will go stale and mouldy and eventually wasted) and the others in the village will have to go without bread for some time. Meanwhile, the baker made a lot profit in a flash because of me. How would my action and the baker's profit affect the village economy? Would that be about my immoral behaviour rather than about the village economy, i.e., I will probably be kicked out of the village and that's the end of it? Lol

Hello. Thanks for your kind words. I'll check the King James Bible out! '... am puzzled how two religions can follow the laws of Moses and fight each other.' Exactly! I found the following (written by someone called BS Foad, M.D.): Islamic values are the same as Christian values 1-Belief in God and in being accountable to God: That there is a Day of Judgment, Heaven & Hell 2-Be good to your families and neighbors 3-Establish prayer and give in charity and help the poor and needy 4-Apply your faith in the way you live your life with noble character and morals, get close to God and never despair of his mercy 5-Faith in God’s prophets & messengers and following their example And faith in God’s divine books as our constitution 6-Learn and improve and invite to God by our example How Islam has become so divisive has got to do with politics, hasn't it? And many people have become to hate Muslims as collective by default. It's not only in the West; I have a friend in India and she tells me that once upon a time people of all religions lived happily together.

Gosh, you're well-read, Aurelien, and thanks for your input. 'how those texts were exploited for very specific agendas,' I'm inclined to agree with that. Islam has certainly been shaped from both inside and outside to be divisive, and the mindset has been established for non-Muslims to hate the religion, generating the notion that all Muslims are bad. I know some people are trying to reform Islam and they agree that removing Hadiths the words of Muhammad would make a good start, if possible at all.

The Quran sums up the view of the Prophet Abraham among Muslims: "Who can be better in religion than one who submits his whole self to Allah, does good, and follows the way of Abraham the true in Faith? For Allah did take Abraham for a friend" (Quran 4:125). It sounds like Abraham was a much greater prophet than Muhammad, yet, I'm under the impression that Hadiths the words of Muhammad are cited a lot more often by his worshippers and haters alike. I was wondering why that is, if that makes any sense. Was that Muhammad himself who decided to use Islam as a political weapon (after he reached Medina)? I'm kind of looking way, way back into the history of Islam to try to find how the religion became so problematic and divisive from inside and outside perspectives.

Hello. Thank you for your input. Much appreciate it. Memes often come with satirical and/or exaggerated expressions, so I don't normally take them literally. It says "Don't know if this is a serious problem in your countries... ", so if it isn't a problem where you live in the US, that's good. Meanwhile, three other members on this page who also live in the US acknowledge the problem. Your country is huge, so the severity of the problem is probably very different from area to area. Incidentally, I live in the UK and many species of bee are on the brink of extinction in parts of the UK – and some types have been lost entirely, so it is a serious problem in the UK. I read somewhere that climate change, habitat loss, pollution and disease are among the causes of bee extinction. In terms of ecosystems, I always understand that each species fits like a jigsaw puzzle piece in the ecosystem it belongs. I don't think it is the case that even if all bees are gone, we can still replace them with butterflies and others simply because they are all pollinators. In terms of economy, apparently the bee’s pollinating services are worth £690m a year to the UK economy. So, if all bees died out, it'll have an impact on the UK economy. If bee farms are doing well in the US, that is good news.
