Democratically - I like something then I engage in a trade. If I don't like something after the trade then I tell you what I don't like. You make it right or tell us that you don't think you are responsible for making it right. The next person reads the reviews and decides if that will please them. If so they engage in a trade and it continues. No government required. Of course dishonest reviews will cause dissatisfaction but that dissatisfaction will devalue everything in that market. So it is in the longterm interest of that market to police the reviews.

"The right to mold the political, moral, and religious opinions of ... children is a right exclusively and jealously reserved by our laws to every parent; and for the government to attempt, directly or indirectly, as to these matters, to stand in the parent's place, is an undertaking of very questionable policy. Such an attempt cannot fail to excite a feeling of jealousy, with respect to our public schools, the results of which could not but be disastrous." - Massachusetts Special Legislative Committee, 1840 We will be sending our kids to public school but I am preparing myself to teaching them logical questioning, philosophy, religion and dealing with people who are wrong but in authority. Makes me think of "The Magic Engineer," LE Modesitt - where the order engineers are sent into exile among the chaos magicians.
Anyone else looking forward to the new Dune movie?

So they are going to try again. I'm skeptical. It's a great story and it parallels with the idea of limited oil (spice) being pumped out of the Muslim states (Fremen) to power airplanes and cars (space travel). But good luck conveying that in a 3 hour movie. In today's foolishness, we'll probably get some quasi-environmental message mixed in with the evil make Dune Great Again (Harkonnens) failing against the noble leftist freedom fighters (Atreides) with some obligatory intersectionality and tokenism thrown in.

Marxism vs Fascism... discuss
RobBlair comments on Mar 5, 2019:
Marxism usually pertains to an international movement of workers rising up against the man where fascism is a national movement that incorporates some sense of national identity. Both involve state control over the markets and businesses and minimizes the individual. History shows that Marxism continues to spread where fascism dies with the failure of the country. I'd compare the 2 to malignant and benign cancer respectively. Marxism seems less evil because we don't see it. We see the concentration camps from Hitler. I've met gentlemen with bar-codes tattooed on their arm. We are kept almost completely ignorant of the Marxist failures in Venezuela, North Korea, Eastern Europe and the USSR. Remember all those videos in school showing Mao killing his own people? Yeah I don't either. Venezuela just happened. Did you see all those videos of poor starving people? Nope.

RobBlair comments on Mar 5, 2019:
Once an illegal alien is identified, they should be removed. It isn't necessarily the states fault for the Federal Government failing it's duty. I agree that illegal aliens shouldn't be counted in the census. If we're passing an amendment, I'd propose removing immigration from judicial purview unless the individual has been provided a claim status (asylum hearing, green card, etc...). Come here illegally you go into a work camp for 1 year and then are removed excepting executive pardon. No trial, no appeal.

I believe one of the marginalized groups today are white supremacists. Does your college really want to "deeply integrate inclusivity" with them? What about other racist groups? If you treat each other based on group identity, aren't you marginalizing self identity? We should all "reaffirm a commitment to support inclusivity" (or just "support inclusivity") of individuals by denying the validity of group identity.

Does failing to buy health insurance create externalities?
RobBlair comments on Mar 1, 2019:
Failing to pay for a service is called theft and it does create externalities. There are situations where we, as a society, would want to provide treatment for health conditions for those who can't afford them and I could see a mandate as appropriate given: for emergency care only, charged at the market rate. Beyond that I do not want to decouple the authority to use a service with the responsibility for paying for the service as it creates economic moral hazards and will eventually fail the system. Unfortunately, opening the door even a crack allows bureaucrats to purchase votes by giving away other people's money.

Extreme socialist policies could backfire on Democrats in 2020... [americanlookout.com]
RobBlair comments on Mar 1, 2019:
Demographically, conservatives have an uphill climb. Trump won the election because the lazy left didn't bother to vote. 2018, where both sides were activated, ushered in a wave against conservatives mostly because of Trump. I'd think it difficult for someone who gets their news from the MSM to even consider Trump palatable. This is why they fear Schultz. He's palatable to the left and his policies aren't to the left of Hitler, Mao and Stalin.

Illegal activity was engaged in by the local authorities (poll watchers were arrested and a man casting his ballot was shot). Petition of redress to the governor was ignored. At the least, the "sheriff" should have been charged and tried for breaking the law.
What's people's thoughts on Tommy Robinson being banned from all social media????

This idea/experiment that every human has equally inherent dignity and worth has, for our nation, eventually brought the end of slavery and much of racism. It has pushed us to fringes of sexual equality and argues against the historically normal "powerful having control over the powerless" type governments. I vote nay to the suggested amendment. As for rationality, I'd argue that only someone who can demonstrate that they have more inherent value or worth is allowed to modify this statement. The obvious problem, of course, is figuring out what gives you inherent worth.

I'm interested in what leads people to choose a particular ideology, or religion.
RobBlair comments on Feb 23, 2019:
I would think that an ideology is not static and not necessarily well defined. It is not one choice but a journey that does not lead everyone to the same place. Religion is similar.
